Bye Bye Shy Shies!
I knew there was a problem when the waitress walked up to our table to take our drink order the other night, and Miss Priss turned to her and said, "Shy shies?" That's "french fries," in the Priss-tionary.
We had been in Virginia for a month and then had MIL in town for a week. We ate out. A lot. I know I had the new crock pot to do some cooking with, but we were so busy during MIL's trip, and she took pity on me and never expected me to make a meal. See, I told you she knows hubby does the cooking! So Priss got to experience just about every french fry and grilled cheese known to man.
I am not happy with my little Priss, at such a tender not-even-two age, already obsessed with fried foods. I wanted to be the type of mom that always had nutritious food at meals. The type who's kids don't even know what a shy shie is. The type who's kid's favorite food is broccoli and eats it like candy. I thought we were on the road to Happy Veggie Land when she was eating jarred baby food and she'd eat all of it. Even the jars of beans that smelled very weird and not something I could eat myself. But she ate them! It wasn't until I tried to switch to table food that the road to veggieville took a devastating detour. After all those jars of green beans, she refused to eat a real one. She tried it. Didn't like it. I still give them to her once in a while, she still turns her nose up at them. To date, she will consent to eating two vegetables (sweet potatoes and peas, canned only) and three fruits (bananas, apples and pears). It's appalling.
But I did not want to take the easy way out! I'd rather she ate bananas five times a day then a regular diet of grease. So for the month of August, we will break out of the fast food habit. We are banning fried food altogether and making an attempt to abstain from eating out, especially fast food. We'll only go if it's somebody else's idea (we don't want to be party poopers, after all) and will NOT order anything fried.
How long will it last? Will we really make it the whole month? That remains to be seen. But at least we've got some accountability, now that our commitment is out in internetland!
To prepare, I thought I'd better clean out the freezer to remove temptation. Check out last night's "dinner" (I use the term loosely):
Wish us luck!
